AB de Villiers Disagrees With Coach Ten Doeschate on Sooryavanshi’s International Debut

The debate over young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s international debut has intensified, with former South Africa captain AB de Villiers disagreeing with the Indian team management’s cautious approach.

The teenager’s omission from India’s recent T20I series, coupled with Sanju Samson’s poor run of form, has divided former cricketers and fans over whether Sooryavanshi should be fast-tracked into the national side. While the team management continues to back experience, several cricket experts believe the youngster has already done enough to earn his opportunity.

India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate recently defended the decision to keep Sooryavanshi out of the playing XI, saying the youngster is ready for international cricket but should follow the same progression as every other player. He also stressed the importance of showing faith in established performers such as Sanju Samson, who played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year. According to the team management, providing players with an extended run sends a positive message about consistency and trust.

AB de Villiers, however, believes India missed an ideal opportunity by not giving Sooryavanshi his debut during the two-match T20I series against Ireland. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former South African batter said the series against a lower-ranked opponent would have been the perfect platform for the teenager to gain valuable international experience. De Villiers also said he disagreed with the view that Sooryavanshi must necessarily follow the traditional selection process after producing an exceptional IPL season.

The discussion has gathered momentum after Sanju Samson struggled with the bat, registering low scores in his recent T20I appearances. Former India coach Ravi Shastri, along with former England captains Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook, has supported the idea of giving Sooryavanshi an early debut. On the other hand, former India players Cheteshwar Pujara and Saba Karim have argued that the youngster’s inclusion should not come at the expense of an experienced player who has previously delivered for the national team.

Following India’s 2-0 series defeat to Ireland and an interrupted start to the England tour, questions over the team’s batting combination have become even more prominent. De Villiers said India must quickly adapt to English conditions, where batting requires greater patience and tactical awareness than in the high-scoring environment of the IPL. He noted that totals around 140 to 160 can often prove match-winning in England, making smart decision-making crucial.

With the five-match T20I series against England still underway, attention is expected to remain firmly on India’s selection decisions. Whether the management continues to back Samson or hands Vaibhav Sooryavanshi his long-awaited debut will be closely watched in the coming matches. The contrasting opinions from former players have only added to the anticipation surrounding one of India’s brightest young batting prospects.
