What is the ‘milk feeding’ ritual?
This tradition is centuries old among the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan and some rural areas, colloquially known as ‘Aanchal Peena’ (drinking milk from the mother’s anchal or veil). The special thing is that this tradition is not limited to Rajasthan only, but it is followed even today in some communities of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Nepal.

According to this ritual, when the groom – dressed in wedding clothes – is about to leave the house with his wedding procession, he sits near his mother. After this the mother symbolically breastfeeds her son from the corner of her aanchal (veil).
After this, the mother places her hand on her son’s head and gives him her blessings as he is about to start a new life and step into household life. This ritual serves as a poignant reminder to the son that he can never fully repay the debt he owes to his mother for her milk—no matter how great or successful he becomes.
