“A leader, fighter, and true part of our family”: Mumbai City mourns passing of ex-coach Jorge Costa

Mumbai: Jorge Costa, the former head coach of Mumbai City FC and a towering figure in Portuguese football, died aged 53 on Monday after suffering a cardiac arrest at FC Porto’s training centre, according to reports.

Mumbai City FC confirmed the devastating news and honoured their former coach in an emotional tribute.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our former Head Coach, Jorge Costa. A leader, a fighter, and a true part of the Mumbai City family…Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Jorge,” the club posted on social media.

Costa took over as head coach of Mumbai City FC in 2018 and led the team for two seasons, guiding them to the semi-finals of the Indian Super League (ISL) in 2018-19, only the second time the club had reached that stage.

Beyond his coaching legacy in India, Costa enjoyed a glittering playing career. A rock in defence, he captained FC Porto to UEFA Champions League glory under José Mourinho in 2004 and earned 50 international caps for Portugal. His sudden death has left fans, players, and the footballing world in shock and mourning.
