When the news was shared on the Reddit thread, fans were quick to drop their honest views on the remake. One wrote “I really loved the original and this just feels unnecessary. Can we just leave some films be and not reboot, remake or try and make expanded universes out of?” Another added, “They literally cannot leave ONE thing untouched.” A third one wrote, “Stop the reboots! Just do a new idea, for the love of God! Also are we really going to contend with the absolute ickiness of a 13 year old in a sexualized 30 year old body?”

In the original version, Jenna’s teenage self was played by Christa B. Allen, while Ruffalo portrayed her childhood best friend and eventual love interest.

Director Brett Haley shared his thoughts about taking on the project in a statement to Deadline. He said, “13 Going on 30 is one of those rare, perfect films. Funny, emotional, deeply human, with unforgettable performances from Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Judy Greer. I’m a longtime fan, so stepping into this reimagining comes with tremendous responsibility.”
She also spoke about the significance of Garner returning as an executive producer. “Jennifer Garner being on board as an executive producer, after playing such a big part of what made the original special, is especially meaningful,” he said.
The filmmaker also expressed excitement about working with the new cast. “I also couldn’t be more excited to reunite with Emily Bader after People We Meet on Vacation. She and the amazingly talented Logan Lerman are a magical pairing. I feel incredibly lucky to be trusted with something that means so much to so many people.”
