Dominance of digital payments increased in the country, so many billion transactions took place in March

The scope of digital payments is increasing rapidly in India and the biggest example of this is UPI. In March 2026, 22.64 billion transactions were recorded through Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which is the highest level ever. Expressing happiness over this achievement, the Department of Financial Services said that the country is rapidly taking forward the digital payment revolution.

24% increase on annual basis

If compared with last year, there were 18.3 billion transactions in March 2025, which has increased to 22.64 billion this year. In this way, a growth of about 24% has been recorded on annual basis. Whereas in February 2026, this figure was 20.39 billion, from which it is clear that the use of UPI is continuously increasing every month.

Easy and secure payment system

Its simplicity and security are the major reasons behind the success of UPI. It works on the two-level security rules of the Reserve Bank of India. In this, the first level is mobile number and the second is UPI PIN, due to which transactions remain secure and the risk of any kind of fraud is reduced.

85% share in the country’s digital transactions

Today, about 85% of the total digital transactions in India are done through UPI. Not only this, the contribution of UPI in real-time digital payments globally has also reached about 50%, which shows its increasing popularity.

UPI reached many countries of the world

UPI is no longer limited to India only. It has also started in countries like UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France and Mauritius. Its entry in France is being considered as the first step in Europe, which is providing great convenience to Indians living or traveling abroad.

NPCI is running the system

UPI is operated by the National Payment Corporation of India, which is an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks Association. This system allows people to transfer money and make payments in a quick and easy way.
