Asia Cup 2025: Washington Sundar Joins New Team Mid-Tournament

The Tamil Nadu all-rounder is currently part of India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad as a standby. However, he, just like other reserve players, has not travelled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the tournament and will be called up if and when the need arises.

In the middle of the ongoing Asia Cup, Washington Sundar has signed a deal with the Hampshire County Cricket Club for the final two rounds of the County Championship.

Hampshire will take on Somerset at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton, from 15-18 September and then lock horns with Surrey at Utilita Bowl from 24-27 September.

Washington Sundar will be seen playing County Cricket for the first time since 2022, when he played for Lancashire in both red-ball and white-ball formats.

We’re delighted to bring Washington to the club – Giles White

In an official statement issued by the County team, Hampshire Director of Cricket, Giles White, said that they are delighted to rope in Washington Sundar and backed him to play a key role for the side.

“We’re delighted to bring Washington to the club for the County Championship. He had an excellent series against England this summer and he’ll play a key role with two big games coming up against Somerset and Surrey,” Giles White, Director of Cricket, said in an official statement.

Sundar was recently seen in action in the high-profile five-match Test series against the England National Cricket Team, where he played a crucial role in India levelling the series 2-2.

The 25-year-old all-rounder, who is a favorite of the Gautam Gambhir-led team management, featured in four out of five matches in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. He was not picked in the playing XI for the series-opener at Headingley in Leeds, but was slotted in the team for the remainder of the series.

In eight innings with the bat, Sundar scored 284 runs at an average of 47.33, including a match-saving century at Old Trafford in Manchester. With the ball, he bagged 7 wickets at an average of 38.57, an economy of 3.64, and a strike rate of 63.57.

India annihilate the UAE in their Asia Cup 2025 opening match

In their Asia Cup 2025 opening match, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side crushed the UAE National Cricket Team by 9 wickets at the Dubai International Stadium.

Opting to bowl first, India bundled out the UAE for 57 as Kuldeep Yadav bagged 4 wickets and Shivam Dube got three wickets. Chasing the target, Abhishek Sharma made 30 runs before Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav finished off the run chase in 4.3 overs.

After India’s victory, the veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle highlighted how India’s spin-heavy approach led to the star pacer Arshdeep Singh’s exit from the playing XI. He stated:

“Clearly India have decided to be a spin heavy deep batting side. And that means it is difficult finding room for someone of the calibre of Arshdeep Singh. I am also very curious to see how Sanju Samson fits in at 5.”
