Fuzilka: The Police arrested a former Captain of the Indian Army from Madhya Pradesh for killing his wife. The man had been on the run for the last four years. His conviction was earlier upheld by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Accused held from Pandhurna district
As per the police, the accused Sandeep Tomar was arrested from Pandhurna district in Madhya Pradesh. He was produced before a court, which sent him to judicial custody. He was posted in Abohar in 2013, when he reportedly killed his wife Shveta Singh, news agency PTI reported.
While he initially tried to prove that it was suicide, the police revealed that it was a case of murder.. After convicting him, the trial court sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2014. The Punjab and Haryana High Court later upheld the conviction in 2022. While he was granted bail in 2019, he did not surrender.
He had then started changing his location to evade arrest, police said. His father-in-law, Ram Naresh, had moved the high court in 2024 demanding the arrest of a former army official. The high court then asked the Punjab Director General of Police to file an affidavit by April 8, explaining the steps that were taken to take Tomar into custody. As the Special Investigation Team (SIT) was then formed to nab the accused.
How did the breakthrough happen?
The breakthrough in the case came after Fazilka police traced a bank account linked to Tomar’s PAN card, which was used by him to book an LPG cylinder. The police then tracked his location to Madhya Pradesh, after which he was nabbed.
Sharing details, the police said that the bank statement of Tomar revealed that he was getting LPG cylinder refill from an agency in Pandhura. The information was shared with Pandhurna Police, after which the convict was immediately taken in custody by the local police. He was produced before the court in Fuzilka and sent to judicial custody.
