‘Recovery of encroached land from Bangladeshis, introduction of UCC’: BJP releases poll manifesto in Assam

Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday released its manifesto for the Assam polls. While the state will go on polls in one phase for the 126-member Assembly on April 9, results will be announced on May 4.

The party is looking to defeat the anti-incumbency once again this time. On Tuesday, the manifesto was released by senior party leader and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

BJP manifesto promises protection of land

In its manifesto, the party promised protection of land, heritage, and the dignity of indigenous people, as well as Rs 5 lakh crore infrastructure investment. It consisted of 31 promises. Among them are the recovery of encroached land from Bangladeshi people, introducing the Uniform Civil Code in the state, and ensuring the development of the state and employment opportunities in the state.

The Union Minister, while releasing the manifesto, said the same has been prepared on “a decade of transformation of the state, which the Congress could not achieve in 60 years”. She added, “The Congress had no focus on long-term development of North East as that is what its politics is all about.”

Massive development has taken place under the BJP rule in the state, she claimed, adding that “many young Assamese are leaving their global careers and returning to Assam, not out of compulsion but due to opportunities”.

Peace restored in Assam: Nirmala Sitharaman

“Assam lived with AFSPA for 32 years due to Congress policies, but the BJP ensured that the law was removed from most states,” she further said while pointing out that peace has been restored in the state.

Among those who were also present on the occasion included Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita, State BJP president Dilip Saikia, National Vice President Baijayant Panda, state cabinet ministers and other senior party leaders.
