Competition in the country’s domestic aviation sector now appears to be limited. While giving information in the Rajya Sabha, the Central Government said that now mainly only two airline groups dominate the Indian skies, first IndiGo and second Air India Group. These two companies together are operating about 91 percent of the total domestic market.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol said that Indigo continues to remain at the top position. Last year in 2025, its share was around 64 percent, which has also been recorded at around 63.6 percent in January 2026. On the other hand, Air India Group which includes Air India, Air India Express and Vistara. Their share in the Indian market will be around 27 percent in the year 2025 and 26.5 percent in January 2026. Overall, only 9 percent of the market is left for the remaining small airlines.
statement on airline crisis
The government also informed that IndiGo has canceled a large number of domestic flights in December 2025. A total of 5,689 flights were canceled during this period. Especially in the first three days of the month, more than 3.64 lakh passengers faced problems. The reason for the cancellation of flights was said to be due to pilot scheduling irregularities and failure to follow the new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules.
Crores of rupees were returned as compensation
Two flights were canceled after the crisis. The airline also compensated the passengers for them. According to the government, IndiGo has so far paid approximately Rs 4,620.5 lakh (about more than Rs 46 crore). The ministry also clarified that refunds to all affected passengers have been returned to their original mode of payment.
Questions on the government regarding lack of data
Some questions have also been raised on the government in this whole matter, because many important data are not available. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) does not have complete data on the airline’s losses or the total economic impact on passengers. Additionally, there is no official record of passengers who did not receive refunds or were not provided alternative travel facilities.
