‘Crime against humanity’: UN diplomat resigns over ‘possible nuclear weapon use in Iran’

New Delhi: An United Nations diplomat has resigned and accused the global organisation of gearing up for a situation involving the possible use of nuclear weapons in Iran.

Diplomat explains reason behind resignation

The UN diplomat who has resigned, Mohamad Safa took to X, uploaded a letter and explained why he has taken the step. He was Patriotic Vision or PVA’s main representative at the UN. For those who are unaware, PVA is an international body with a special consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council. Since 2013, he was PVA’s executive director and in 2016, he was nominated by the organisation as its permanent representative to the UN.

Call to understand situation’s gravity

In a post on X where he uploaded his resignation letter, Safa wrote, “I cannot in good conscience be part of or witness to what is happening at a time when the UN is preparing for possible nuclear weapon use. It has been an honor cooperating with the UN for nearly 12 years under different Secretaries-General and Human Rights Council Presidents, leading PVA delegation.”

In a separate post on X, he wrote, “I don’t think people understand the gravity of the situation as the UN is preparing for possible nuclear weapon use in Iran. This is a picture of Tehran. For you uneducated, untraveled, never-served, warhawks licking your chops at the thought of bombing it. It’s not some low population desert. There are families, children, family pets. Regular working class people with dreams. You’re sick to want war.”

The same post added, “Tehran is a city of nearly 10,000,000 people. Imagine nuking Washington, Berlin, Paris, London, or beyond, bombed with nuclear weapons. I gave up my diplomatic career to leak this information. I suspended my duties so as not to be part of or a witness to this crime against humanity, in an attempt to prevent a nuclear winter before it is too late.”
