New Delhi: In 2025, a mid-air collision between an American Airlines passenger jet and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport resulted in the death of all 67 people on board the two aircraft. Now, a video capturing the dramatic moment has been released.

How did the collision happen?

60 Minutes have shared a video that shows the aircrafts colliding mid-air. A fireball ensued and plumes of smoke erupted as both crashed into the Potomac River. The crash on January 29, 2025, when the American Airlines Flight 5342 jet was flying from Kansas and was nearing the airport. At that time, the Black Hawk helicopter was on a routine training mission in restricted airspace. It is one of the deadliest aviation disasters in the US since November 12, 2001.

Coordination in question

The ongoing probe into the crash will be helped by the video. The crash brought the coordination between civilian and military aircraft in busy airspace into question. Officials are unearthing the chain of events that led to the collision and how such incidents can be prevented. Sean Duffy, the US Transportation Secretary, has reportedly said that more than $12 billion will be spend to improve the air traffic control system.
