Cash for women, Rs 25 lakh health cover; Congress’ five guarantees ahead of Assam elections

New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday announced five key guarantees for Assam, focusing on women’s welfare, healthcare, land rights, and justice in a high-profile case. He also attacked the BJP government in the state over alleged corruption.

Addressing a rally in Naoboicha in Lakhimpur district, Kharge said the Congress would provide unconditional financial support to women. He promised monthly cash transfers to women and Rs 50,000 assistance for those who want to start or expand businesses.

Focus on welfare and healthcare

The Congress also promised cashless health insurance of Rs 25 lakh for every family in the state. The party said it would provide permanent land pattas to 10 lakh indigenous people and monthly assistance of Rs 1,250 to senior citizens.

“Our transfers will be without any conditions. It won’t be like the BJP government, where women are asked to become members of their party,” she said.

Kharge also promised that if Congress comes to power, justice in the Zubeen Garg death case will be ensured within 100 days.

Land rights and justice promise

The guarantees include a commitment to resolve land ownership issues by giving permanent leases to indigenous residents. The party also stressed quick action in the Zubeen Garg case as part of its agenda.

“If Congress comes to power, we also promise to ensure justice in the Zubeen Garg death case within 100 days,” Kharge said.

Attack on BJP and chief minister

Kharge accused the BJP government in Assam of corruption and misuse of power. He claimed that party leaders and their families have benefitted from public resources.

He also targeted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him a “fake” CM. Kharge said the BJP had contested the 2021 elections under Sarbananda Sonowal’s leadership but later replaced him.

“But after the Assam Assembly elections, Himanta Biswa Sarma usurped the post of Chief Minister of Assam and tribal leader Sonowal was removed,” he claimed.

Kharge further alleged that the state government is creating fear and trying to divide people.
