ATLANTA (AP) – Matt Turner returned to the U.S. national team goal for the first time in nine months during a friendly match against Belgium, where the team suffered a 5-2 defeat.
Turner, who had not played since June, conceded five goals, two of which he retrieved from the net himself.
Turner, 31, expressed his determination to regain his spot, stating, “My overarching theme for earning that opportunity again is just to continue to be myself, to go out there.” He highlighted the importance of his training performances as contributing factors to his selection for the match on Saturday.
Turner’s Competitive Background
Previously the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. during the 2022 World Cup, Turner’s latest appearance marked his 53rd international cap. He lost his starting position to Matt Freese, who had taken the role during the CONCACAF Gold Cup last summer, resulting in Freese’s 12 consecutive starts.
Coach Pochettino’s Perspective
U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino commented on Turner’s performance, stating, “It’s not that when you concede a goal, it’s only the keeper or mistake of the keeper.” He emphasized the need for evaluating Turner’s form in case Freese becomes unavailable due to injury.
Turner’s Career Journey
Turner’s transition from Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution to Arsenal was challenging, as he did not participate in any Premier League matches and only played a limited number of Europa League and FA Cup games. He later transferred to Nottingham Forest but lost the starting position midway through the season, subsequently being loaned to Crystal Palace before returning to the Revolution.
Reflecting on Performance
After conceding the second goal against Belgium, Turner expressed frustration, saying, “We were in a spot to handle the situation and didn’t.” He acknowledged the need for improvement and stated, “I have to accept that the performance went the way it did and the team performed the way that we did.”
Future Outlook
Turner remains optimistic about his future with the national team, asserting, “I understand and feel in my bones that this coaching staff is very fair and they’re going to give people that deserve chances a chance.” He is prepared for the potential changes that could occur leading up to the next World Cup.
