Pitru paksha shraddha rituals: Pitrupaksha has special significance in Hinduism. This 15 -day period is dedicated to the ancestors, when we perform Shraddha, Pindadan and Tarpan for the peace of the soul of our late ancestors. According to the Panchang, this year Pitrupaksha will start from 7 September 2025 and end on 21 September 2025 on the day of Sarvapitra Amavasya. Religious work done in these 15 days not only gives satisfaction to the ancestors, but also brings happiness and prosperity in the house with their blessings. Let us know what is the correct method of pindadan and tarpan in Pitrupaksha and how you can give peace to the soul of your ancestors.

Right time of Shraddha and Pindadan

Shraddha karma is always done in the afternoon (Qutup period). This time is from 11:36 am to 12:24 pm, when the sun is in the midday. The Shraddha performed at this time reaches the ancestors directly. The same time is considered best for pindadan.

Pindadan method

Pindadan means ‘Pind’ means rice, barley and sesame mixed and make a ball and offer it to the ancestors. Always do pindadan on the banks of the holy river or in a quiet and clean place of the house.

Rice, barley flour, black sesame, milk, honey and Ganga water must be done for pindadan. The person who performs the pindadan should take a bath and wear clean clothes. Take a resolution with Kush grass (Darbh) and water in your hand. Make a body by mixing chawl, barley flour and black sesame seeds. Keep these bodies on the seat of Kush. Offer milk, honey and Ganga water on them. Take the name of your fathers and dedicate this body to them and pray for blessings to them. After the pindadan, provide food to the Brahmins. And don’t forget to donate them.

Method of tarpan

Tarpan means ‘tolerate’ or satisfying. This is a method of offering water. Take a bath and wear clean clothes. Take water, sesame and kusha in the hand. Stand towards the south direction facing the sun, because the south direction is considered the direction of the ancestors. Taking the name of your fathers, let the water filled in Anjali slowly flow. Repeat this action three times. While offering water, chant the mantra ‘Pitrubhaya: Namah’.

Other ways to please fathers

Provide food to Brahmins: In Pitrupaksha, it is considered very auspicious to consolidate a Brahmin at home respectfully. Include kheer-puri and other traditional dishes in the food.

Feed the cow bait: Pitrudev is pleased by feeding the cow green fodder during Pitrupaksha.

Help the poor and the needy: During this time, charity to the poor and the needy also provides peace to the ancestors.
