The long wait of the residents of Delhi-NCR and Western Uttar Pradesh is now going to end. Today i.e. on March 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first phase of ‘Noida International Airport’ in Jewar, Greater Noida. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the terminal building will be inspected at 11.30 am and at 12 o’clock PM Modi will inaugurate it and also address a public meeting. This is not just the inauguration of bricks and stones or infrastructure, but the beginning of a new economic era for Uttar Pradesh. This airport is not just a facility for air travel, but is going to become a major source of trade, employment and regional development.
Will become the engine of UP’s economy
For Uttar Pradesh, a geographically landlocked state, connecting directly with the rest of the world has always been a big challenge. Jewar Airport will end this hurdle forever. The state government and officials estimate that once fully operational, this airport will directly contribute more than 1 percent to the GDP of UP. This airport will prove to be a backbone of the ambitious target that the state has set itself to create a 1 trillion dollar economy. This new connectivity will not only boost global trade but will also provide a new lease of life to industries like electronics, mobile manufacturing, food processing and textiles.
Noida International Airport
There will be a big jump in employment
The success of any big project is determined by what benefit the general public is getting from it. According to Pankaj Jaiswal, former CFO of Air India SATS, this will be the largest greenfield airport in the country. It will have an annual capacity to handle 7 crore passengers and approximately 10 lakh tonnes of cargo. Our farmers will get direct benefit from this. Perishable agricultural products like fruits, vegetables, flowers and dairy will now be able to reach international markets directly. This farm-to-global market model is likely to lead to a solid increase in farmers’ income by 20 to 30 percent. At the same time, many new doors of employment will open for the youth also. In the first five years alone, more than 50,000 direct jobs will be created in areas such as airport operations, security, retail and ground handling. Apart from this, 40 to 50 lakh indirect employment opportunities are also expected to be created in the long term in transport, tourism, supply chain and MSME sectors.

Huge changes will be seen in every sector
The impact of this mega project will not be limited only to the boundary walls of Jewar. Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway belt will now emerge as major investment centers of the country. Demand for hotels, logistics parks and data centers will increase rapidly. Its effect will be that urbanization will spread to Bulandshahr, Aligarh and Mathura. Along with this, the global reach of major religious and tourist destinations like Varanasi, Mathura, Vrindavan and Agra will improve, which will lead to a huge increase in the number of foreign tourists. Currently the cost of freight (logistics) in the country is around 13-14 percent, with the opening of this airport the supply chain will improve and this cost will reduce significantly.
The supremacy of Dubai and Doha will be challenged
Designed as a multi-modal international hub, this airport will also reduce the heavy congestion at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) to a great extent. With plans to have five runways, it will transform into the country’s largest aviation hub and a major transit point between Asia-Europe in the times to come. In the changing global circumstances, it is being seen as a strong alternative to established and busy hubs like Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi. Not only this, under the ‘China Plus One’ strategy, foreign companies who are looking for alternatives to China for investment can now directly turn to UP. This is likely to bring huge investment in sectors like defence, semiconductor and electronics.

A big hub will be built for business
Any big airport is not limited only to the convenience of passengers, but it also brings new opportunities for employment and business. Jewar Airport is also being developed with the same thinking. A big cargo hub has been built here on about 80 acres, which will initially have the capacity to handle 2.5 lakh metric tons of goods every year. In future it can be increased to 18 lakh metric tonnes. Apart from this, a special facility for maintenance and repair (MRO) of aircraft is being built on 40 acres. This will provide faster and better connectivity to industries and manufacturing sector, which will directly strengthen the economy.
Jewar Airport
Big investment of Rs 11,200 crore in the first phase itself
‘Noida International Airport’ is a huge infrastructure project, which is being built on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. An investment of about Rs 11,200 crore has already been made in its first phase. Built about 40 kilometers away from Pari Chowk of Greater Noida and near Yamuna Expressway, this airport is spread over about 1,334 hectares. If we talk about capacity, initially this airport will be able to handle about 1.2 crore passengers every year. As its next phases are completed, this capacity will increase to about 7 crore passengers. At present, Terminal-1 is spread over approximately 1,38,000 square meters, which will be expanded to approximately 5,00,000 square meters by the fourth phase. Its first runway is 3,900 meters long and 45 meters wide. It has a modern all-weather navigation system, which will enable even large wide-body aircraft to land and take off easily.
