From the announcement of this airport till the time of inauguration, Jewar is in the headlines. Know, where did the name Jewar come from? What is its real story? Does it have any connection with Ramayana or Mahabharata period?

A small town in the tehsil of Gautam Buddha Nagar district of UP.

Jewar is a tehsil and small town in Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh. This place came into limelight in recent years because of Noida International Airport. People are also curious about its name. According to the 2011 census, the population of this town is a little more than 32 thousand. By the time the new census is conducted, the definite population will have increased. Earlier it was a part of Bulandshahr district. When Gautam Buddha Nagar district was formed in the year 1997, Dadri and Bisrikh blocks of Ghaziabad district and Dankaur and Jewar of Bulandshahr were made a part of the new district.

What is the simple meaning of the word jewellery?

In Hindi, jewelery means jewel or jewellery. This word is also in use in common parlance. For this reason, at first glance this name seems to be related to jewellery. Then how did the town get its name Jewar?

A universally accepted, written and ancient text-based story on the origin of the name of Jewar town is not easily found. The stories found are mostly based on folk tradition. Folk tradition means the story passed on among the people. This is not a sure proof of history. There is a general understanding among the people that this name would be related to jewellery. It is also believed that there might have been a jewelery business here at some point of time or the sale of jewelery might have been famous in some fair or market nearby. The problem with this conjecture is that no single original text or any concrete example comes forward to support it. Another possibility is linguistics. Place names change with time. Pronunciation changes. Handwriting changes. Sometimes a new form of an old word is formed. But in the case of jewellery, no such widely accepted gazetteer-citation or ancient inscription-basis is visible in the open sources at present.

Is jewelery connected to Lord Ram?

Now talking about the relation with Lord Shri Ram, there is generally no clear mention of any place by the name of Jewar Kasba in Ramayana, Valmiki Ramayana, Ramcharit Manas or major Puranas. Therefore, it is difficult to say that any scripture says that the name of jewelery is associated with Ram. But one thing is definitely true. This entire area is linked in folk memory to the Ramayana period. Written references to this are available at the government level. On the history page of the official website of Gautam Buddha Nagar district administration, it is written that the past of this area is considered very glorious.

Ravana

Bisrakh is the birthplace of Ravana’s father Vishrava Rishi.

Its roots are said to be related to Tretayuga i.e. Ramayana period. It is also written on the same page that Bisrakh is considered to be the birthplace of Ravana’s father Vishrava Rishi. This thing is recorded as recognition. This means that whether the name of Jewar is directly related to Ram or not, but the fact that the name of Jewar is linked to the Ramayana period in the district and area in which Jewar is situated is clearly recorded on the government website. Grokipedia writes that Jewar town is named after Maharishi Jabali. He was the minister of King Dasharatha in the Ayodhya royal court.

What is the relation of jewelery with Mahabharata period?

It is also written on the website of the district administration that Dankaur was the ashram of Dronacharya during the Dwapar era i.e. Mahabharata period. Pandavas and Kauravas had learned weapons there. Guru Dronacharya’s disciple Ekalavya was also a resident of this place. This is also a part of regional mythological memory, that is, the identity of the area is not linked to just one period. Folk traditions of both Ramayana and Mahabharata are spoken here.

In this way, it would be appropriate to say that whatever may be the name of Jewar, no matter how new or old its history may be, the importance of this area has existed since ancient times. This earth has a relation with Treta Yuga and Dwapar Yuga. When Guru Dronacharya’s ashram is here, Ravana’s father’s birthplace is here, Ravana’s temple is still there in Bisrikh, then it is certain that this land has held a very important place since ancient times. Now with the opening of the airport, it will be known as a symbol of development, no one should doubt this. With the beginning of this golden phase of development of Uttar Pradesh on March 28, Jewar will become the growth engine of the entire state.
