Chennai: The Chennai Corporation has collected property tax amounting to ₹1,946 crore from April of last year up to the present, while an additional ₹452 crore has been collected in professional tax. Notices have been issued to approximately 200,000 individuals who had failed to pay their property taxes, officials said.
A Chennai Corporation official stated that amidst ongoing election-related duties, efforts to collect property taxes are proceeding vigorously. With approximately 1.35 million property owners paying taxes to the Corporation, a substantial amount of tax revenue is being generated.
According to regulations, property tax for the first half of the financial year (April 1 to September 30) and for the second half (October 1 to March 31) must be paid within the respective periods. Corporation officials who go door-to-door offer a rebate of 5 percent (up to a maximum of ₹5,000) to those who pay their taxes within these stipulated timeframes.

Property tax for the 2025-26 financial year has been under collection since last April. More than 400 tax collectors from the Corporation are currently visiting homes to collect taxes. Driven by the intensified tax collection drive, many individuals with outstanding dues are coming forward to pay their property taxes.
₹1,002 crore has been collected as property tax for the first half of the financial year. Meanwhile, approximately 200,000 individuals still have outstanding property tax dues. Notices have been issued to those who have failed to pay their taxes, and warning notices are being pasted directly on the premises of individuals with significant tax arrears.
