Kolkata: The stock market is closed today due to Ram Navami. In fact the stock market is closed for a good 12 days in this month. It includes four weekends and as many as three public holidays. Saturdays and Sunday are holidays for the equity market every week. On top of the as many as three pub,ilc holidays are added to this month’s calendar on BSE and NSE. All types of trading will be closed today.
The first public holiday this month was on Holi, which was held on March 3. and a few other major festivals. It worth knowing them in advance, especially for those who trade in the market. Therefore for as much as 40% of March, there is no trading.
March 2026 has four Saturdays and five Sundays. That makes it nine days of closure. In addition to these nine weekly holidays, the market will also be closed for three major festivals of India. On March 26, there will be no trading in any segment, including equity, derivatives, and currency. Therefore, no investor or trader will be able to buy or sell any share today.
BSE and NSE will also be closed on March 31, which is Tuesday. The occasion is Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir. It is spiritually a very significant for the Jains.
The closure on March 3 will be to observe Holi, one of the major festivals of India. The holiday of March 26 will be to observe Ram Navami and the holiday on March 31 will be to observe Shri Mahavir Jayanti. This the market will be closed for a total of 12 days, which is quite rare in Indian stock market.
Bank holiday in some states
Ram Navami also marks a public holiday for banks in many parts of the country. According to the Reserve Bank of India holiday calendar, banks will be closed in states such as Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal on March 26. But in some states such as Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh the holiday will be observed on March 27. Customers should find out with their local branches before visiting the branch for banking work.
