Hormuz closed, India in danger of gas crisis… In such a time, ‘distant friend’ extends hand. India Faces LPG Supply Risk As Hormuz Disrupts Trade Argentina Steps In As Key Energy Partner

Argentina LPG export to India: India’s LPG supply has been affected due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. In such a situation, Argentina has given relief to India by supplying gas. Know how this partnership can change India’s energy security and future strategy.

The impact of increasing tension in West Asia is now directly reaching India’s kitchen. The blockage on the route through which large quantities of oil and gas enter the country has raised concerns. But in this difficult time, a distant country has come forward as a help to India and this story is now in the news.

Why did the closure of Hormuz increase concern?

Due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, supplies coming from the Strait of Hormuz have been affected. It is believed that India brings about 60 percent of its LPG imports through this route. When this route was disrupted, the biggest question before India was, how would the supply of LPG be maintained?

Argentina supported in such a time

Amidst this crisis, Argentina has offered LPG supply to India. Statistics show that in the first three months of 2026, Argentina has sent about 50 thousand tonnes of LPG to India. In comparison, this figure was only 22 thousand tonnes in the whole of 2025. That means this year the supply more than doubled in just three months.

How is the gas reaching?

Gas is being sent from Argentina’s Bahía Blanca Port to India’s Dahej Port. According to reports, about 39 thousand tonnes of LPG had reached India even before the Iran conflict started, while a new consignment of 11 thousand tonnes left on March 5.

Will Argentina support for a long time?

Argentina’s Ambassador to India Mariano Agustín Caucino has clearly said that his country has large reserves of gas and is ready to supply it to India for a long time. He also said that talks in the energy sector are already going on between the two countries and the situation has further intensified this cooperation.

India’s new strategy: less dependence on one country

India is already changing its strategy regarding energy supply. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also said many times that India is working towards taking energy from more than 40 countries. Its objective is clearly to reduce dependence on any one region or country.

Relationships are getting stronger in business also

Today India is Argentina’s fifth largest trading partner. Apart from LPG, Argentina also supplies soybean oil, sunflower oil, grains and many essential products to India. Cooperation between the two countries is increasing rapidly in sectors like energy, agriculture and minerals.

Biggest Challenge: Distance and expense

However, this partnership is not easy. The sea route from Argentina to India is about 19 to 20 thousand kilometers long, which is one of the longest routes in the world.

Because of this distance:

  • Transport costs increase
  • Delivery takes time
  • Weather also affects

Nevertheless, in the current situation this option has become very important for India.

The crisis in West Asia has made one thing clear, energy security has now become not just an economic issue but a strategic necessity. India has definitely got relief from Argentina’s entry, but in the coming time, the country will have to explore new options, so that the impact of any crisis does not reach the common people.
