After his death, corneas of the eyes were donated and heart valves were also donated. Now these will be implanted in the body of a needy patient. Harish The eyesight of a needy patient can be restored through the cornea of the eye.
What is cornea? How can it bring someone’s light back? How is it transplanted? To find out we Dr. Subhash Giri, Unit Head in the Department of Medicine at RML Hospital Have talked to.
what is cornea
Dr. Subhash explains that the cornea is the outer layer of the eyes. In common language we call it the dark layer of the eyes. This is not the entire eye, only the outer part. Just like the lens of a camera, the cornea is removed from the eyes of a dead person and placed in the eyes of a needy patient. Through this, eyesight can be restored to those people who face problems in vision due to corneal defects. This entire procedure is called cornea transplant.
How is the entire procedure done?
Dr. Subhash explains that in this the cornea is removed within 5 hours of the person’s death. After this they are kept in the eye bank. There the cornea is examined to see whether it is fine or not. After this, matching takes place as to which patient it will be administered to. After matching is completed, surgery is done and transplant is done. After the operation, the patient gradually starts regaining his sight within a few weeks.
Does the light come back completely?
Dr. Subhash explains that if the cornea is healthy and the surgery has gone well, then the patient’s vision comes back. This means that someone else’s donated cornea brings light to the life of a needy patient. In most cases the patient regains vision. However, this depends on how healthy the rest of the eye is.
Example set by Harish Rana’s family members
This step of Harish Rana is not just a medical procedure but an example of humanity. His cornea will become a light in someone’s life and give a new beginning.
