What is fake news about LPG?
For the last few days, some news and posts are becoming increasingly viral on platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. It is being claimed in these reports that the government has made a major change in the timeline of gas refill. According to the fake message, now a gap of 45 days has been made mandatory for Ujjwala (PMUY) connection, 25 days for non-Ujjwala single bottle and 35 days for double bottle connection. The Ministry has termed all these claims as completely fake and baseless and has made it clear that there has been no change in the old system of refill booking.
What are the rules of LPG booking?
The government has made it clear in an official statement that the current refill timeline will remain exactly the same as it was before. According to the rules, the time limit for gas refill is decided only on the basis of the area of the consumer. At present this limit for urban areas is 25 days, while for rural areas it is set at 45 days. This rule applies equally to all types of connections and there is no discrimination on the basis of category of connection (Ujjwala or General).

The Ministry has assured the people of the country that there is sufficient stock of LPG, petrol and diesel available in India, hence there is no need for any kind of worry. Senior ministry official Sujata Sharma informed that all the refineries of the country are currently working at their full capacity and they have adequate reserves of crude oil. To meet the demand of the domestic market, the production of LPG has been further intensified. The government has appealed to the citizens not to make any kind of panic booking, as there is no shortage of supply in the market.
‘Surgical strike’ on black marketers
Taking advantage of the rumours, some anti-social elements are trying to promote hoarding and black marketing of gas cylinders. To stop this, the government has constituted control rooms and district level monitoring committees in 32 states of the country. More than 1500 surprise inspections have been conducted so far as part of enforcement action. Wherever information about illegal activities or hoardings is received, government teams are conducting rapid raids so that consumers continue to get cylinders at reasonable prices.
