Social activist Anna Hazare said on Saturday, July 18 that the central government should talk to Sonam Wangchuk. Anna Hazare said, the government should discuss their demands. This statement came at a time when Delhi Police took Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment. Speaking to news agency PTI, Anna Hazare said, “The government should not test their patience. It is the government’s right to say yes or no on their demands, but there is no harm in holding talks.”

This appeal of Anna Hazare is reminiscent of his Lokpal movement of 2011. At that time, he had gone on a long hunger strike demanding Lokpal law, which had created a lot of political pressure on the then UPA government.

Why was Sonam Wangchuk taken to the hospital?

Delhi Police says that as per the instructions of the Delhi High Court and the advice of doctors, Sonam Wangchuk’s health was being continuously monitored. Considering his health condition, he was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment and medical observation. At the same time, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijit Dipke alleges that Wangchuk was forcibly taken to the hospital against his will.

Protestors raised questions on police action

Some student protesters alleged that they were subjected to force at the protest site. However, the police have presented a different version of these allegations. The protesters say that the policemen reached the spot and introduced themselves as members of the medical team. According to ANI report, a protester claimed that the police asked the volunteers to move aside and then took action.

CJP accused of misinterpretation of court order

Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) chief spokesperson Saurav Das alleged that Delhi Police misinterpreted the Delhi High Court order while taking Sonam Wangchuk to the hospital. He said the court had only directed to monitor Wangchuk’s health and intervene only when necessary.

‘The medical team was continuously monitoring’

According to Saurav Das, CJP’s medical team was checking Sonam Wangchuk’s health two to three times a day. He says that Wangchuk was also sharing information about his health by releasing videos daily and his condition was said to be stable. Das alleged that the police detained him under the guise of a court order, which he termed as contempt of court.

Different claims on the matter

After the incident of taking Sonam Wangchuk to the hospital, different sides have come forward regarding the matter. On one hand, the police say that the action was taken on the basis of court instructions and medical advice, while the protesters and people associated with CJP allege that they were forcibly removed. The controversy regarding the matter still continues.

Hunger strike continues on 21st day

Sonam Wangchuk is agitating demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in the NEET paper leak case. Saturday, July 18, was the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar.
