‘No nuke, 1-month ceasefire, opening of Strait of Hormuz’: Trump’s 15-point plan to end Iran war

New Delhi: As the US and Israel are considering talks with Iran to end the war, the Trump administration has sent a 15-point plan to Tehran, proposing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, restrictions on the nuclear programme and a month-long ceasefire to allow discussion, according to reports.

In its 15-point plan, reportedly sent to Iran via Pakistan, the US has proposed the end of uranium enrichment on Iranian soil and handing over of enriched material, which Israel and the United States presume could be developed into a nuclear bomb, Israel’s Channel 12 reported.

The US has also proposed to lift all sanctions on Iran and extend assistance in developing civil nuclear energy at Bushehr, the Israeli report said.

The report said that the US and Iran are seeking a month-long truce with Iran to negotiate based on the proposals. It also said that the US has proposed reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow chokepoint into the Gulf through which one-fifth of the world’s oil flows. Iran has partially blocked it, sending global energy prices soaring.

The White House and US State Department did not immediately comment on the reports.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump indicated a potential de-escalation in the conflict with Iran, hinting at a possible thaw as he said he was optimistic about diplomacy with Tehran. On Monday, he said the US had a “very good and productive” back-channel talk with Iran.

The US launched air strikes against Iran alongside Israel on February 28 in a massive campaign that started with the killing of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
