Dandruff has become a very common but irritating problem in today’s time, which can affect a person of any age. Often people think of it as just graying or falling off of the scalp, but actually it is a condition related to the scalp in which dead skin cells start falling off rapidly. There can be many reasons behind this, like change in weather, especially the effect of cold and heat, excessive sweating, oily or dry scalp, use of wrong hair products, or stress and unbalanced diet.
Sometimes dandruff appears only as light white flakes, while in some cases it can take a severe form with itching, burning and redness. Some people have dry dandruff, in which dry and light flakes fall off, while some have oily dandruff, in which the scalp remains covered with sticky and thick layers. Dry Dandruff
This is the most common dandruff, in which the scalp is dry and small white flakes fall off easily. Usually seen in winter or in people with very dry skin. Itching is mild and there is not much stickiness on the scalp.
Oily Dandruff
In this, excessive oil (sebum) is produced on the scalp, due to which yellow or thick layers are formed which stick to the hair. This is often caused by sweat, dirt and oily scalp and it is more itchy.
Fungal Dandruff
It is caused by a type of fungus (such as Malassezia), which grows on the scalp and causes layers and itching. There is a problem of redness, irritation and persistent dandruff.
Seborrheic Dermatitis
This is a severe form of dandruff, in which the scalp becomes red, swollen and covered with thick, sticky layers. This can happen not only on the head but also around the eyebrows, nose and behind the ears. There is more itching and burning sensation in this.

How to get rid of dandruff?
Use of lemon and curd- Curd cools and moisturizes the scalp, while the anti-fungal properties present in lemon help in reducing dandruff. Mix some lemon in curd and apply it on the scalp for 20 to 30 minutes, then wash with mild shampoo.
Massage with coconut oil- Coconut oil nourishes the scalp and reduces dryness. Massage with lukewarm oil for 10 to 15 minutes and wash hair after 1 hour. This reduces itching and flakes.
Neem paste or water- Neem has anti-fungal properties, which help in eliminating the bacteria causing dandruff. Boil neem leaves and wash hair with that water or make a paste and apply it.
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)- ACV balances the pH of the scalp and reduces fungal growth. Mix it in water and apply it on the scalp and wash it after 10 to 15 minutes. This also gives good results.
