Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah confirmed on Tuesday that he will depart the club at the end of the current season, concluding a nine-year tenure marked by significant achievements.
Salah, 33, has established himself as one of Liverpool’s all-time top scorers, netting 255 goals in 435 matches.
The Premier League champions announced that Salah has reached an agreement to leave a year prior to the expiration of his contract, which has raised questions about his future in the sport.
Salah’s Legacy at Liverpool
Salah’s exit comes amid a decline in his performance during his final year at Anfield, which included a period of being benched. In a candid statement, Salah expressed his feelings about the club, stating, “Unfortunately the day has come.” He elaborated on his deep connection to Liverpool, saying, “I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life.”
Since joining Liverpool from Roma in 2017, Salah has won two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy, contributing to a total of eight titles. He ranks third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list, trailing only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt, and has claimed the Premier League Golden Boot four times.
Liverpool acknowledged Salah’s impact, describing him as “one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history” and noting that his contributions to the team have been “remarkable.” The club also emphasized Salah’s wish to inform fans of his decision as soon as possible, highlighting his respect for their support.
Future Uncertain for Salah
While Salah has confirmed his departure, he has not disclosed details regarding his next club. Leaving as a free agent would mean Liverpool would not receive a transfer fee. Earlier this year, Salah was the subject of a rejected bid from a Saudi club, reportedly Al-Ittihad.
Following a two-year contract extension last season, Salah’s relationship with the club has soured, particularly following public disagreements with manager Arne Slot. Salah remarked, “I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame,” during an interview after being left out of the squad against Leeds in December.
Despite these challenges, Salah is reportedly focused on achieving the best possible finish for Liverpool this season. He is currently sidelined with a muscle injury sustained during a Champions League match against Galatasaray.
Upcoming Matches and Legacy Celebration
Liverpool’s final Premier League match of the season is scheduled against Brentford at Anfield on May 24. The team is also preparing for a Champions League quarterfinal against Paris Saint-Germain, where they are considered underdogs.
As Salah prepares to bid farewell to Liverpool, the club indicated that there will be an appropriate time to celebrate his achievements and legacy later in the year.
