Harish Rana, who got the approval for euthanasia from the Supreme Court, has breathed his last in Delhi AIIMS. He died under the procedure of passive euthanasia. His nutrition was gradually stopped a few days ago. After which he died. PTI has confirmed this quoting sources.
Harish Rana He was suffering from coma for about 13 years and his condition was continuously worsening. Despite treatment, when the chances of improvement diminished and the financial burden started increasing, his parents approached the Supreme Court. The court approved his euthanasia. This is the first case of its kind in India.
In India, this process is possible only under strict legal and medical guidelines. For this reason Harish was brought to AIIMS. He was under the supervision of many doctors in the palliative care department here. First his nutrition was stopped and after this gradually other procedures were done. After this, now Harish has left his body.
Was in coma for 13 years
Harish Rana was in coma for 13 years. He suffered a serious head injury after an accident of falling from the roof. After this he went into coma. His parents got him treated in big hospitals of the country, but Harish could not come out of coma. All the big doctors had rejected the possibility of Harish’s recovery. Although he was undergoing treatment for 13 years. The cost of Harish’s treatment was around Rs 60 to 70 thousand every month. The family had now become very weak financially. When the hope of Harish’s recovery was lost, the family went to court. Where euthanasia was approved.
What is euthanasia?
Euthanasia means that in a situation in which treatment has to be limited or stopped. This happens when the patient’s chances of recovery are very less and he is in unbearable pain. In India, this is done with certain conditions under the instructions of the Supreme Court.
