Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed the pace of metro projects in Uttar Pradesh. Special emphasis was laid on increasing connectivity, investment and income with progress in Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra Metro.

Lucknow. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday conducted a high-level review of the ongoing metro projects in the state. He directed that all the work should be completed within the stipulated time and with better quality. He says that it is the priority of the government to make Uttar Pradesh the leading state of the country in modern, easy and world class urban transport system. For this, transparency and efficiency are necessary at every level from construction to operation. He also stressed on regular coordination meetings between the Metro Rail Corporation and the concerned departments.

Metro will increase economy and investment opportunities

The Chief Minister said that Metro is not just a means of transportation but also a major medium to strengthen the economy of cities and attract investment. He directed officials to develop new income sources to make metro projects financially strong. Multilevel parking, retail, food courts and office space should be promoted in stations and complexes. Also, attention should be given to advertising, digital branding and better utilization of metro assets. Emphasis was also laid on increasing revenue and attracting private investment through Transit Oriented Development (TOD).

Focus on multi-modal and last mile connectivity

Keeping in mind the convenience of passengers, the Chief Minister gave instructions to strengthen multi-modal connectivity with the Metro. He said that last mile connectivity should be better, so that passengers can get easy journey from home to destination. For this, metro stations were asked to be connected to city buses, e-rickshaws, taxis and app-based services. Instructions were also given to work expeditiously on coordination of additional parking, feeder routes and private bus services.

Progress of Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra Metro Projects

The progress of Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra metro projects was reviewed in the meeting. About 23 km long corridor of Lucknow Metro is fully operational. Its expansion from Charbagh to Vasant Kunj (about 11.16 km) is targeted to be completed by 2030, which will provide better connectivity to Old Lucknow.

Work is going on at a fast pace on both the 32.4 km long corridors of Kanpur Metro. In this, operations have started on about 15 km stretch and the remaining work is planned to be completed by March 2027. In the 29.4 km long project of Agra Metro, operation is going on on about 6.5 km section. Corridor-1 is targeted to be completed by June 2026 and Corridor-2 is targeted to be completed by 2027 in a phased manner.

Steady growth in passenger numbers and revenue

It was told in the meeting that the usage of metro services is continuously increasing. A large number of passengers are using metro every day in Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra. This has reduced traffic on the roads and people are also saving time. Operating costs have been kept under control due to better management and energy efficient technology. There has also been an increase in income from non-freight income such as advertising, retail and branding. An income of about Rs 222 crore was recorded in the year 2024-25.

Emphasis on transparency, technology and regular monitoring

The Chief Minister directed the officials that all the projects should be monitored regularly and there should be no compromise on quality. He said that where needed, new technologies should be used so that the work can be done faster and in a better way. The main objective of the government is to provide safe, convenient and timely transport services to the general public.
