Dashain festival of Nepal is the longest and most important Hindu festival, which is celebrated every year for 15 days in September or October. It is also known as Badadasha or Mohini and Dashain. This festival is a symbol of the victory of good over evil, in which the victory of Goddess Durga is celebrated over the demon Mahishasura. During this time, the people of Nepal gather with their families, worship Goddess Durga and receive blessings from the elders. Also, it is also a symbol of harvesting and brings happiness and prosperity throughout the country.
Nepali Dashain Festival 2025
This year, the festival of Dashain in 2025 will start on September 22 with Ghatasthapana and end on Kojagrit Purnima on 6 October. This is the celebration of the worship of Goddess Durga and her victory over Mahishasura. Dashain festival lasts for 15 days. It is observed as a symbol of the end and prosperity of the crop season. This includes rituals such as Ghatasthapana (sowing barley seeds), flowerpati (bringing holy flowers and leaves) and Vijay Dashami (receiving big commentary and blessings).
Traditions related to Dashain
Ghatasthapana:- This is the first day of Dashain festival and barley seeds are sown in a sacred urn, which is called Jamara. Later they turn into yellow grass.
Jamara:- After the Jamara, Vijay Dashami is applied on the head of family members as a blessing.
vaccine:- On the day of Vijay Dashami, family members vaccinate with red mixture of rice, curd and vermilion.
Phoolpati:- Phulpati is celebrated on the seventh day of this festival.
Swing and kites:- During Dasain, people swing the swing and fly kites.
traditional food:- During this time dishes like goat meat, cell bread (a type of fried bread of rice) and lentils are prepared.
The ninth day of this festival is also called ‘Khulna of Talaju temple of Kathmandu’. Many offices and public services are closed during Dasai in Nepal. Also, animals are sacrificed in the Tillag Temple of Hanuman Dhoka on Mahashtami and Maha Navami during the Dasai festival.
