Maharishi Katyayan was childless. For this reason, he performed rigorous penance for Goddess Bhagwati, so that he could get the happiness of a daughter. The Goddess was pleased with Maharishi’s rigorous penance and gave him a boon that she would be born as his daughter.
After some time, a demon named Mahishasura started creating havoc in all the three worlds. Even the gods got upset due to this. After this all the gods took refuge in Lord Vishnu. Then Lord Vishnu took everyone to Lord Shiva. After this, at the behest of all the gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh created a goddess with their might.
The gods named that goddess Katyayani, because she was first born in the house of Maharishi Katyayan, where Maharishi worshiped her. Mother Katyayani killed Mahishasura, after which the gods got rid of the terror of Mahishasura. Therefore the mother is also known as Mahishasurmardini.
