Chaitra Navratri 2026: Why were the gods not able to kill Mahishasura? Know the complete story of Maa Durga’s incarnation

Maa Durga Story: In Hindu religion, the festival of Navratri is celebrated as a celebration of the power and victory of Mother Durga. But have you ever wondered why despite the presence of powerful gods like Indra, Varun and Yamraj himself, Maa Durga had to incarnate to end Mahishasura? After all, what boon did that demon get who created havoc in heaven? Come, on this auspicious occasion, let us know about the story of the arrival of Maa Durga and the end of Mahishasura.

Mahishasura was blessed with the boon of being invincible

According to Durga Saptashati, Mahishasura was a very powerful demon, who performed severe penance to Lord Brahma with the desire to become immortal. Lord Brahma appeared and told him that the one who is born is certain to die. Then the clever Mahishasura asked for a boon that would make his death almost impossible. He asked for a boon that he should die neither at the hands of any god, nor at the hands of a demon, nor at the hands of any human. Mahishasura was arrogant that a woman was so soft that he would never be able to kill her. Due to this arrogance, he defeated the gods in the war and took control of heaven.

Divine incarnation of Maa Durga

Due to the boon, none of the gods including Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Indra were able to kill Mahishasura, as they were all male forms. When the atrocities of Mahishasura increased, all the gods took refuge in the Trinity i.e. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. For the destruction of Mahishasura, a divine radiance emanated from the bodies of all the gods. From the union of all these luminaries, a very beautiful and eighteen-armed goddess appeared, whom we know as Maa Durga.

Gods gave their divine weapons

After the appearance of the goddess, all the gods gifted her their powers and weapons so that she could kill Mahishasura.

  • Lord Shiva gave his trident.
  • Lord Vishnu bestowed his Sudarshan Chakra.
  • Lord Indra gave his thunderbolt and the bell of Airavat the elephant.
  • Varun Dev gave the conch and the noose.
  • Agni Dev provided power.
  • Himalaya presented a Singh (lion) for riding.
  • Fierce battle between Mahishasura and Maa Durga

There was a fierce war between Mother Durga and Mahishasura for 9 days. Mahishasura changed many forms with his magical powers, sometimes buffalo, sometimes lion, sometimes elephant, but he could not match the power of Mother Durga. At last, the mother struck Mahishasura’s chest with her trident and killed him. Due to this victory, Mother Durga is also called Mahishasura Mardini.
