Amazon customer receives detergent instead of Rs 3 lakh 5090 graphics card

New Delhi: A shocking story has surfaced from the world of Indian e-commerce that has left many tech enthusiasts worried. A student from IIT BHU named Harsh Raj and his friend recently ordered a high-end GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card for their startup work. The purchase cost them nearly Rs 2,99,995 on Amazon India. However, instead of the powerful hardware they needed for their server, they were greeted by a 1 kg packet of Ghadi detergent powder inside the box.

The incident has quickly gone viral on social media platforms like X and Reddit, sparking a heated debate about the safety of high-value online purchases. The buyer, using the handle u/void_SW, shared that the order was “Fulfilled by Amazon” (FBA), which usually means the product is stored and shipped directly from Amazon’s own warehouse. Despite having unboxing video evidence and clear proof of weight discrepancies, the customers are struggling to get their money back after their complaint was closed by the platform.

Evidence of a major logistics lapse

The buyers pointed out several red flags that suggest a serious security failure within the warehouse or delivery chain. Most importantly, the shipping label on the package listed a weight of only 1.56 kg. A real RTX 5090 graphics card with its retail packaging and triple-fan cooling system usually weighs between 2.5 to 3 kg. The user noted that “1.66 kgs is the exact weight of a 1kg detergent packet plus bubble wrap and a cardboard box,” proving the GPU was never in the box to begin with.

The unboxing video also showed that while the outer Amazon bag was sealed, the internal box was a mess. It had sliced manufacturer seals that were poorly re-taped and a fake aftermarket barcode. This suggests that the package might have been tampered with before it even reached the customer’s doorstep.

Allegations of tax fraud and serial scamming

Upon further investigation into the seller, named “FAB WORLD Point,” the buyers found that they were not the only victims. Other customers had reported receiving washing powder instead of expensive GPUs on March 17 and March 20. Even more concerning were the details on the tax invoice. Although the store was listed as FAB WORLD Point, the bill was issued under the name “MOHD KHALID.”

The invoice also showed 0% IGST, which is highly unusual since computer components in India must carry an 18% GST rate. The buyer stated that “Amazon is hosting and protecting a seller committing major tax evasion.” This has raised questions about how such sellers are vetted by major e-commerce platforms.

Current status of the dispute

  • The Amazon Executive Customer Relations team initially promised a resolution by mid-March.
  • After a legal threat, the team sent an email stating that “the correct product was shipped” and refused the refund.
  • The buyer has now initiated a chargeback through their Visa debit card and is preparing to move to Consumer Court.
  • Amazon previously stated on the seller’s page that “This item was fulfilled by Amazon, and we take responsibility for this fulfillment experience,” yet they continue to deny the claim.

This case serves as a loud warning for anyone buying expensive electronics online. Many users are now suggesting that buyers should opt for open-box delivery or use credit cards with strong dispute policies to avoid such mental and financial stress.
