Michigan State Advances to Sweet 16 with Victory Over Louisville

Michigan State University secured a spot in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time under head coach Tom Izzo after defeating the University of Louisville 77-69 on Saturday in Buffalo, New York.

Coen Carr led the Spartans with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Jeremy Fears Jr. contributed a remarkable 16 assists.

Izzo expressed pride in his team’s achievement, stating, “Back to the Sweet 16, where this program belongs.” The victory propels Michigan State into the East Region semifinals, where they will face either the University of Connecticut or UCLA, both of whom play on Sunday.

Fears Shines with Record-Breaking Performance

Jeremy Fears Jr. not only scored 12 points but also became the first Big Ten player to record 10 or more assists in each of the first two games of the NCAA Tournament. He had previously achieved 11 assists in the Spartans’ first-round victory over North Dakota State.

Fears set a new Michigan State record for assists in a March Madness game, surpassing the previous mark of 14 held by Magic Johnson. He also broke the assist record for the KeyBank Center, previously held by Temple’s Pepe Sanchez.

Izzo commented on Fears’ achievement, noting the high standards set by Johnson, saying, “Well, if he’s shy of just Magic Johnson, he’s in pretty good company.” Fears’ performance included several key assists during a crucial 13-3 run that helped the Spartans maintain their lead.

Carr’s Impact on the Game

Coen Carr, a junior forward, recorded his first double-double of the season, contributing significantly with his scoring and rebounding. He expressed his excitement about performing well in the NCAA Tournament, stating, “It means a lot, just to be in March Madness, one of the greatest stages on Earth, and to have a game like this.”

In addition to Carr, Trey Fort and Jaxon Kohler also made notable contributions, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively. The team showcased strong depth and resilience throughout the match.

Louisville’s Season Comes to an End

Ryan Conwell led the Cardinals with 21 points, while Adrian Wooley added 17. Louisville, which entered the tournament as a No. 6 seed, was hoping to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015.

Despite a strong effort, Louisville struggled to regain the lead after Michigan State extended their advantage to 10 points midway through the first half. The Spartans effectively countered any comeback attempts from the Cardinals.

Looking Ahead for Michigan State

Michigan State will prepare to face a familiar opponent in the next round, having previously lost to UConn in an exhibition and splitting their season series with UCLA. The Spartans aim to build on their momentum as they advance deeper into the tournament.

Izzo praised his team’s growth and commitment, highlighting the importance of perseverance in achieving success in the tournament.
