Sean Manaea to Begin Season in Bullpen Role for New York Mets

New York Mets left-hander Sean Manaea will start the season as a relief pitcher instead of being part of the starting rotation. This decision comes as the team prepares for the upcoming season.

Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed on Saturday that Manaea will assume a ‘piggyback’ role, meaning he will pitch immediately after a starter during the first few games as the rotation is established.

Team Rotation Plans

The Mets will open the season with a starting rotation that includes Freddy Peralta, David Peterson, Nolan McLean, Clay Holmes, and Koda Senga. The decision to utilize Manaea in the bullpen follows the acquisition of Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers in January, which added depth to the pitching staff.

Manaea’s Career Background

Manaea, 34, has a substantial career record, having started in 210 of his 243 regular-season appearances. He signed a three-year contract worth $75 million after a successful 2024 season, where he achieved a 12-6 record with a 3.47 ERA and placed 11th in the National League Cy Young Award voting. However, his performance dipped in the following season, finishing with a 2-4 record and a 5.64 ERA.

Mendoza’s Insights on the Rotation

Mendoza indicated that the team likely would not require a sixth starter during the early part of the season due to an unusual number of off days in the schedule. He emphasized that Manaea will still have opportunities to start games as the season progresses.
