New Delhi: For over two decades, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham has lived in fans’ hearts as the perfect Bollywood family drama, with its songs, emotions and grand sets still replaying on TV and OTT.
Over the years, whispers about a sequel have kept audiences excited, but now director Karan Johar has put an end to the rumours once and for all.
The end of K3G‑2 rumours
In a recent statement on the show The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, Karan Johar clearly said that there are no plans for “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2” or any spin‑off linked to his shelved Mughal‑era project “Takht”. He explained that he feels a deep sense of nostalgia and respect for the original 2001 film, and does not want to risk spoiling its legacy with a follow‑up. “I would never mess with what people have loved for so long,” Johar added, stressing that the film should be left as it is.
Why fans should let it be
Johar also pointed out that fan expectations for a sequel are too high, and any attempt to recreate that magic could disappoint rather than delight. He said, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2 is not happening. We should leave it alone now,” directly addressing the social media buzz and media speculation. He believes that the original story, with its focus on family bonds, forgiveness and emotional drama, still works best in its own universe rather than being stretched into another chapter.
What does this mean for his next projects
With the door closed on a K3G sequel, Johar is instead focusing on other big‑scale, emotionally driven family dramas that are “in the same space” as his earlier hits, but not direct continuations. He has also clarified that even his long‑delayed period epic, Takht, will not be turned into a K3G‑related spin‑off. For now, fans will have to be content with rewatching the classic together, rather than waiting for a new chapter from the Raichand family.
