Yogi Government: After 2017, there was extensive improvement in the energy sector of UP. 1.65 crore new connections provided, transmission capacity doubled to 31,500 MW and 15 lakh+ new transformers installed. This improved supply and reduced line loss by 13.77%.
Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed major changes at structural and technological level in the energy sector during the last 9 years. During the tenure of Yogi Adityanath government, the focus was on making power supply more reliable and accessible along with capacity expansion at all three levels, generation, transmission and distribution. The effect of this was that today the state is not only meeting the increasing demand, but has also created a strong energy base for industry and investment.
Stability and expansion in supply chain
There has been a clear improvement in the pattern of electricity supply in the state. At present, electricity is being provided 24 hours to district headquarters, 22 hours to tehsil headquarters, 20 hours to rural areas and 10 hours to agricultural purposes. This system has become more stable and predictable than before, which has given impetus to economic activities.
Comprehensive strengthening of distribution infrastructure
Large-scale infrastructure expansion was undertaken to strengthen the power distribution network. Between 2017 and November 2025, 15,87,369 new distribution transformers were installed, taking the total number to 27,91,844. During the same period, 765 nos. of 33\11 KV sub-stations were constructed and the total number of sub-stations reached 4,582 nos. Along with this, the capacity of 2,455 sub-stations was also increased, which reduced the problem of overloading and improved the quality of supply.
100% electrification and surge in connectivity
The state has achieved important achievements on the front of rural electrification. By the year 2017, the limited electricity supply to 1,28,494 villages was increased to 2,94,818 villages and 100 percent electrification was ensured. Under the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (Saubhagya), more than 2.86 crore families were given electricity connections till 31 March 2021. Apart from this, 2,51,487 left out houses were also electrified under the RDSS scheme.
Digital transformation of connections and services
Consumer services in the energy sector have been made simple and transparent. More than 1.65 crore new connections were issued since 2017, compared to 8.44 lakh connections between 2012 and 2017. The process of new connections was expedited through the Jhatpat portal, while the payment system was made accessible through online bill payment, consumer service centres, public service centers and other means.
Success in Smart Metering and Loss Control
Smart metering was rapidly implemented to technologically upgrade power distribution in the state. So far, 56 lakh consumer meters, 2.19 lakh DT meters and 20,000 feeder meters have been installed under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, which is an important step towards the 100 percent target. To reduce line loss, 1,24,210 circuit kilometers of LT line was converted to AB cable. As a result, line loss reduced to 13.77 percent in the year 2024-25. Besides, transformer damage rate also reduced from 1.96 percent to 0.68 percent and from 9.31 percent to 6.55 percent.
Double expansion in transmission capacity
The investment made in the transmission sector has had a direct impact on the supply capacity. Transmission capacity of 17,890 MW was increased to 31,500 MW in the year 2016-17. At the same time, import capacity increased from 7,800 MW to 16,700 MW. From the year 2017 to December 2025, 3 Nos. 765 KV, 22 Nos. 400 KV, 72 Nos. 220 KV and 104 Nos. 132 KV substations were established and 26.091 circuit kilometer transmission lines were energized.
Continuous increase in production capacity: Special attention was also given to increasing production capacity in the direction of energy self-sufficiency. The installed capacity of 29,750 MW has been increased to 32,259 MW by 31 March 2022, while the total contracted capacity has reached 55.860 MW. Commissioning of units of projects like Khurja 2×660 MW, Ghatampur 3×660 MW, Obra C 2×660 MW, Jawaharpur and Panki has led to significant increase in production and increased reliability of supply.
Relief decisions for farmers and consumers
To support the agriculture sector, it was decided to provide free electricity to private tube wells. 2.42 lakh tube well connections were released between April 2022 and December 2025. Under the Electricity Bill Relief Scheme, waiver of outstanding amount and relief in revenue assessment was given, which reduced the financial pressure on consumers.
A system capable of meeting increasing demand
The demand for electricity is continuously increasing in the state. The maximum demand was 28,284 MW in the year 2023-24, rising to 30,618 MW in 2024-25 and 31,486 MW in 2025-26. The state’s energy system is proving capable of meeting this increasing demand, which is a positive sign for industrial development and investment attraction.
State of the energy sector before 2017
Before 2017, the energy sector in Uttar Pradesh was facing many problems. There were limited hours of electricity supply in rural areas and a large number of villages were deprived of electrification. There were frequent power interruptions due to weak transmission and distribution networks. The process of obtaining electricity connections was complex and slow, while limited generation and transmission capacity led to a large gap between demand and supply. In the last 9 years, there has been a drastic change in this situation through infrastructure expansion, technological improvements and policy decisions, due to which Uttar Pradesh has become one of the leading states in the energy sector.
