According to the legend, Mata Brahmacharini was born in the house of mountain king Himalaya. Later, following the advice of Narad ji, the mother did severe penance to get Mahadev as her husband. For the first thousand years of penance, Mother ate only fruits and flowers. After this the mother lived only on the ground for a hundred years. Mother continued her rigorous penance without caring about sun, rain etc.
After this, for many years mother only ate Belpatra and worshiped Lord Shiva. Towards the end of her penance, Mother also stopped eating Belpatra. That is why mother is also called Aparna. After this, the mother continued her penance by remaining waterless. Seeing the harsh penance of the mother, the mother is called Brahmacharini. Lord Shiva was pleased with the penance of Mother Brahmacharini.
After this, God came to Mother Goddess in the form of a sage to test her. However, the mother did not listen to anything said by Lord Shiva who came in the form of a sage and continued her penance. Then Lord Shiva, who came in the form of a sage, told her that she would definitely get Mahadev as her husband. Finally Lord Shiva adopted mother as his wife.
