According to the story of Vishnu Purana…
In Hindu mythology, Maharishi Durvasa is considered one of the most angry sages. From demons to gods, everyone was afraid of his anger. Durvasa Rishi is considered to be a part of Lord Shiva. According to the story described in Vishnu Purana, once Maharishi Durvasa with great love gave a divine garland of Parijat flowers to Devraj Indra, but Indra was intoxicated with opulence. He did not respect the gift given by Maharishi Durvasa.
Devraj Indra made his elephant Airavat wear the garland given by Maharishi Durvasa. The fragrance of the garland excited Airavata and he threw the garland on the ground and crushed it under his feet. Seeing his gift being insulted like this, sage Durvasa became angry. At that very moment he cursed Devraj Indra. He said that Lakshmi, whose ego has blinded you, will leave heaven today itself.
Due to the curse, Goddess Lakshmi drowned in the sea.
Rishi Durvasa’s anger did not calm down just like this. He further cursed all the gods to become powerless and godless. Due to the curse of the sage, Goddess Lakshmi drowned in the ocean, after which the glow of heaven faded and the gods became powerless. Taking advantage of this, the demons took over heaven. After this all the gods reached Lord Vishnu and asked for help.
Giving the solution, Shri Hari asked the gods to churn the ocean along with the demons. Lord Vishnu told the gods that by drinking the nectar produced by the churning of the ocean, the gods would again become powerful and immortal. Then the gods and demons together churned the ocean, from which 14 gems were obtained. In this the goddess of wealth Lakshmi appeared again. At last Dhanvantari Dev appeared with the nectar pot.
