FIFA Approves Joël Piroe and Melayro Bogarde to Represent Suriname in World Cup Qualifying Playoffs

FIFA has granted permission for Leeds forward Joël Piroe and defender Melayro Bogarde of Austrian club LASK to represent Suriname in the upcoming World Cup qualifying playoffs.

Both players, who are Netherlands youth internationals with familial connections to Suriname, are set to compete against Bolivia on March 26 as the nation seeks to qualify for the World Cup.

FIFA’s Approval and Historical Context

FIFA announced its approval on Wednesday, allowing the players to switch their national team eligibility to Suriname, a nation that gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975. Suriname, located on the northern tip of South America and bordered by Brazil, competes in the CONCACAF soccer region, which includes the Caribbean and Central America.

Upcoming Matches and Playoff Structure

Suriname will face Bolivia next Thursday in Monterrey, Mexico, as part of the intercontinental playoffs to secure a World Cup spot. The winner of this matchup will play against Iraq five days later for a chance to qualify for the tournament.

Notably, none of the players called up by head coach Henk ten Cate, a former Ajax coach, currently play for clubs in Suriname.

Challenging Path Ahead

The playoff winner will enter a formidable World Cup group in June, which includes strong teams such as France, Norway, and Senegal.

In related news, the Netherlands soccer federation has also approved the eligibility change for 18-year-old Benjamin Khaderi, a midfielder with PSV Eindhoven, allowing him to represent Morocco.
