Harish Rana’s father wants to donate his organs, what do experts say about his noble wish

After getting approval for euthanasia from the Supreme Court, Harish Rana is in the palliative care department of Delhi AIIMS. Where many doctors are monitoring him. The process of Harish’s euthanasia is going on. He is in an unconscious state, but the parents are going through deep pain. Despite this he has not given up hope. Their dream is that even if their son gives up his body, his organs should be given to other needy patients so that they feel that their son is alive even after giving life. Although there are many questions, there are also obstacles, but looking at their struggles sometimes these seem meaningless.

Harish Rana’s father has expressed his desire to donate his son’s organs. Harish has been in coma for 13 years, so does being in coma affect the body parts? Are these types of patients suitable for organ donation? Let us know the opinion of experts regarding this.

Dr. Ajit Kumar in the Department of Medicine at GTB Hospital, Delhi. It is said that when Harish, who was euthanized, will say goodbye to this world, the process of his organ donation will start. This is because he is not brain dead but a coma patient. The condition of the organs of a coma patient depends on many factors. Like how fit are the patient’s organs, what is the risk of rejection rate. Are any organs on the verge of failure? All these things are seen. Whether all the organs of a coma patient are fit for transplant can be known only after screening of the organs.

What is the difference between the organs of a coma patient and a normal brain dead person?

Dr Kumar says that there can be a difference between the organs of a normal bread person and a coma patient. For example, if a person is fit and dies suddenly in a road accident and his organs are transplanted to another patient for donation, then it is expected that the organs will be fit and the rejection rate will be low.

On the other hand, the organs of a coma patient may or may not be completely fit. It depends on many things. For example, there is a possibility of frequent infections in a coma patient. Due to which the liver and kidneys are affected. Although the cornea (eye) and some tissues (skin) are fit in a coma patient and can be donated, but everything completely depends on the medical examination.

According to Dr. Kumar, be it a coma patient or a normal person, every case is different from medical point of view, hence the final decision is taken by the medical team only.

Regarding this, former Dr. Deepak Suman in Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi It is said that there are strict legal guidelines regarding organ donation in the country. This entire process takes place under the supervision of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). For this, rules regarding organ donation and transplant have been set in the country under the Human Organ and Tissue Transplant Act, 1994. Organs are taken only when the person dies or the doctor declares him brain dead. Only after this, the process of organ donation proceeds with the consent of the family.

Dr. Deepak says that in the case of Harish Rana, it is important to respect the feelings and dignity of his father. The idea of a father giving life to others through his son is very good, but all the work is done as per medical guidelines.
