When will Ramadan end? Eid 2026 Moon sighting date in India explained

New Delhi: Ramadan 2026 began in India on February 19 after the crescent moon was sighted on the evening of February 18. Since then, Muslims across the country have been observing daily roza from dawn until sunset. As the final days approach, attention now turns toward one important question: when will Ramadan end, and on which date will Eid al-Fitr be celebrated in 2026?

Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar, which is based on the cycle of the moon. Each month begins with the physical sighting of the crescent moon, not simply an astronomical calculation alone. Because a lunar month lasts either 29 or 30 days, Ramadan does not have a fixed end date in advance.

The end of Ramadan is marked by the sighting of the Shawwal crescent. The moment the new moon is confirmed after sunset, the month of fasting concludes, and the next day is celebrated as Eid al-Fitr.

Moon Sighting Date for Eid 2026 in India

Since Ramadan 2026 began on February 19 in India, the 29th fast will fall on March 19, 2026. On that evening, moon sighting committees and religious authorities across the country will look for the Shawwal crescent.

If the moon is sighted on the evening of March 19, Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on March 20, 2026.

If the moon is not visible due to weather conditions or astronomical positioning, Ramadan will last 30 days. In that case, the moon will be observed on March 20, and Eid will be celebrated on March 21, 2026.

At present, astronomical projections suggest that March 19 evening is the most likely date for moon sighting in many regions, but the final confirmation will come only after sunset observation.

Why Eid Dates Differ Across Countries

Eid does not always fall on the same date worldwide. Different countries follow their own moon sighting committees. Some rely on local visibility, while others may follow announcements from Saudi Arabia.

Because of this, Eid al-Fitr 2026 may be celebrated on March 20 in some countries and March 21 in others.

In India, official announcements are usually made by prominent religious bodies and local mosque committees after Maghrib prayers on the 29th day of Ramadan.

Spiritual Meaning of the Final Days

The last days of Ramadan carry special importance. Many believers increase prayer, charity, and reflection during this period. The final ten nights are considered especially sacred, as they include Laylat al Qadr, the Night of Power.

As Ramadan draws to a close, there is a quiet shift in emotion. There is hope that prayers have been accepted, gratitude for the strength to fast, and a sense of humility at the thought of the month ending.

Eid al-Fitr then arrives not simply as a celebration, but as a mark of spiritual completion.

What Happens Before Eid Prayer

Before offering Eid prayer, Muslims are required to give Zakat al Fitr, a charitable donation intended to support those in need. This must be given before the Eid prayer so that everyone can participate in the celebration.

On the morning of Eid, special congregational prayers are offered in mosques and open grounds. Families gather, share meals, and greet one another with wishes of peace and joy.
