Mummy, no’: 7-year-old’s brave act saves mother from death at Aligarh station

New Delhi: A tense situation unfolded at Aligarh railway station, where a woman in distress tried to end her life as she edged towards the tracks as a train approached. Her seven-year-old daughter gripped her from behind and shouted for her to stop. After listening to her voice, other passengers and GRP personnel rushed in and moved the woman away safely.

According to officials, the woman took a step as she had been troubled by ongoing domestic violence. As she saw the train approaching, she moved towards the tracks on Sunday. Before anyone could make a move, her younger daughter, Twinkle, ran forward and clutched her.

The eyewitnesses said that the girl was crying out loudly and continuously repeating, “Mummy, no…mummy, no,” as she tried to pull her back. As the police officials and Government Railway Police (GRP) heard her shouting, they rushed to the spot.

Police rush in to rescue woman

Police officers pulled the woman back and ensured her safety. A delay of just a few seconds could have led to a serious incident but the child’s quick action in such a serious situation changed the course of events.

Domestic violence drove woman to the brink

According to the preliminary information, the woman was fed up with the domestic conflict for a long time. Her husband works at a petrol pump and allegedly drank frequently and assaulted her. She was disturbed by the continuous harassment, after which she decided to leave for her parents’ house in Banda district. But as soon she reached the station, she broke down and took the step.

The scenes left the other passengers emotional, with several passengers calling out the girl’s awareness brave and thoughtful. They said it was remarkable for a child of such a young age to respond with such bravery in a tense situation.

The GRP station in charge, Inspector Sandeep Tomar, said that relatives from the woman’s parental and maternal homes have been called to the police station after the incident. He added that the counselling is being conducted to ensure the woman receives support and such a situation does not arise again.
