The electoral battle in Puducherry is between the NDA (AINRC-BJP) and the DMK-Congress alliance. NDA has the benefit of CM’s development work, but allegations of corruption and not getting statehood are challenges. At the same time, DMK alliance is struggling with leadership crisis and seat sharing.
The dates of Puducherry Assembly Election 2026 have been announced. The Election Commission told in a press conference on 15 March 2026 that voting for 30 assembly seats of Puducherry will be held in a single phase on 9 April and the results will be declared on 4 May.

There are a total of 9.44 lakh voters, which include 4.43 lakh males, 5 lakh females and 139 third gender. 1,099 polling stations have been set up, which will have 100% webcasting. The NDA alliance (AINRC-BJP) has decided on seat sharing – AINRC will contest on 16 seats, BJP on 14.

In the last election, NDA won 16 seats, AINRC became the largest party (10 seats). N. Rangaswami became CM for the fourth time. UPA got 8 seats – DMK 6, Congress 2. Voter turnout was 84.8%.
Puducherry – Battle of NDA vs DMK alliance
The election atmosphere has started heating up in Puducherry. On one side is the ruling NDA, which includes AINRC and BJP, while on the other side is the alliance of DMK and Congress ready to challenge. Let us understand what are the strengths and weaknesses of both the camps.
AINRC – BJP Alliance (NDA)
Strength: Chief Minister N. Rangaswami’s development work is the biggest plus point for the government. The CM’s image is clean and people have good opinion about the government.
Weakness: The government has been accused of corruption. Questions are also being raised regarding law and order, because crime cases have increased. The allegations of collusion of some leaders in units manufacturing fake medicines is also a major weakness. Apart from this, AIADMK is also waiting for seat sharing, which is causing some tussle in the alliance.
Opportunity: There is a BJP led NDA government at the centre. Being a part of this, Puducherry can get help from the Center for development, which is a big opportunity.
challenge: Puducherry not getting statehood is a big issue. The elected government does not have complete powers. The removal of the lone woman minister Chandrira Priyanga from the cabinet has also become a challenge for the government. Too much dependence on the center is also a kind of challenge. Small parties like NTK, LJK and TVK can also spoil the game by cutting votes.
DMK alliance
Strength: The roots of Congress have been very strong here and now it is increasing its strength again. DMK is also gaining ground at the grassroots level. This alliance is not behind in the matter of publicity also.
Weakness: There is no consensus yet between Congress and DMK on who will be the leader of the alliance and who will be made the face of the Chief Minister. The picture is also not clear regarding seat distribution, which is a major weakness.
Opportunity: The ruling government has failed to fulfill the promise of ‘Best Puducherry’. The DMK alliance can benefit from the anti-incumbency or resentment against the government.
challenge: The Congress party is dependent on only a few big leaders, which is a risk. Internal differences with alliance partner DMK are also a challenge. The seat distribution not being final can also create problems. Here too parties like NTK, LJK and TVK can make the contest difficult.
