New Delhi: After guiding India to T20 World Cup 2026 glory, Team India head coach has Olympic has set his sights on Olympic gold medal. Cricket will make its long-awaited return to Olympics programme at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, and Gambhir is already excited to be a part of the historic occasion.
Gambhir described representing India at the Olympics as a “huge honour”.
Olympics gold on Gambhir’s mind
“I would love to be part of the Olympics. It’s a huge honour. Very few get the honour of representing India at the Olympics,” Gambhir said during a session at a special RevSportz event – Trailblazers 4.0.
Gambhir also spoke about the team and leadership philosophy as well as his approach to preparation. “I was very clear from the first day. The tougher the game, the more aggressive you have to be. Come the big game, come the crunch game, you’ve got to be more aggressive,” he said.
Collect effort over individual feats
Gambhir, on several instances, has stated about a culture that resonates with a team-first attitude, with a focus on collective effort rather than individual milestones. Reiterating his philosophy, Gambhir credited the entire team and the support staff for the T20 World Cup win.
“Success is never about one person. It belongs to everyone in the dressing room, from the players to the support staff,” he said.
While Gambhir has tasted success in white-ball cricket with ICC Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup titles, his record as India coach in Tests has been dismal.
Under Gambhir, India have been whitewashed twice in a year at home (vs New Zealand and South Africa). Gambhir acknowledged the disappointing results and admitted there is a lot of work to be done in longer-format cricket.
“Transition in red-ball cricket is always tougher than white-ball cricket. But if the team keeps working hard in the right direction, we will be fine,” he said.
