New Delhi: More than two decades after the release of the cult horror film Bhoot, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has revealed an eerie detail about the movie’s shooting location. According to the director, the apartment where much of the film was shot has reportedly remained vacant since production wrapped in 2002.
RGV shared the surprising anecdote during a special screening of the film at the Red Lorry Film Festival 2026 in Mumbai. Speaking to the audience, the director explained that the flat in Mumbai’s Lokhandwala Complex gained notoriety after the film’s release.
‘Bhoot’ apartment has been vacant since 2002
“It’s been more than 20 years and even today that flat is still vacant,” the filmmaker said, adding that potential residents have repeatedly refused to move into the apartment once they learned about its cinematic past.
The director also spoke about why he chose an apartment setting for the story. Rather than filming inside a large bungalow, RGV intentionally picked a regular residential flat to make the horror feel closer to everyday life.
He also revealed that the production was completed remarkably quickly. Because most scenes were filmed in a single location, the team managed to shoot a large portion of the movie within just 30 days.
During the conversation, the director recalled how he decided to cast Urmila Matondkar in the film. He explained that a memorable close-up shot of the actor from the song “Hai Rama” in his earlier film Rangeela convinced him she could handle the emotional intensity required for Bhoot.
More about Bhoot

The horror drama also featured a supporting cast that included Nana Patekar, Rekha, Fardeen Khan and Tanuja. Following the success of the original film, RGV later directed its sequel Bhoot Returns, starring Manisha Koirala.
The filmmaker also hinted that work on Sarkar 4, the next instalment in his political crime franchise led by Amitabh Bachchan, is expected to begin soon.
