Chennai: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has announced that the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on April 23, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. The announcement comes as the tenure of five state legislative assemblies, including Tamil Nadu, concludes this coming May.

According to information released by the Election Commission, the key dates for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections are as follows:

Issuance of Election Notification – March 30, 2026 (Monday)
Last date for filing nominations – April 6, 2026 (Monday)
Scrutiny of nominations – April 7, 2026 (Tuesday)
Last date for withdrawal of nominations – April 9, 2026 (Thursday)
Date of Poll – April 23, 2026 (Thursday)
Counting of Votes – May 4, 2026 (Monday)
Date by which the election process shall be completed – May 6, 2026 (Wednesday)

Election schedule for other states

Voting will be conducted in a single phase in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, and Assam, while in West Bengal, it will take place in two phases.

The Assam Legislative Assembly election will be held on April 9, and the results will be declared on May 4.
The Kerala Legislative Assembly election will be held on April 9, and the results will be declared on May 4.
The Puducherry Legislative Assembly election will be held on April 9, and the results will be declared on May 4.

Delay in announcement

The tenure of the legislative assemblies of five states—including Tamil Nadu—concludes this coming May. Consequently, the dates for the legislative assembly elections in these five states have now been announced. While the election dates were declared as early as February in 2021, this time around, the announcement had been delayed until after March 10.
