Uttarakhand weather: Rain, snowfall, and strong winds forecasted; orange alert issued in several districts

Dehradun: The weather in Uttarakhand has seen a sudden change. After rain and snowfall in high-altitude areas on Sunday, the Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for March 16, warning of thunderstorms, hailstorms, and strong winds reaching speeds of 60 km/h in several districts.

According to the Meteorological Centre, districts including Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, and Champawat are likely to experience severe weather conditions. The department has urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during storms.

Weather in Dehradun

On Sunday, Dehradun saw changing weather throughout the day. The morning began with overcast skies and light drizzle. Later, the sun appeared briefly, but by afternoon, dark clouds gathered, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Lightning accompanied the downpour, causing temperatures to drop sharply. By evening, the chill forced residents to take out warm clothes once again.

Snowfall in High Altitude Areas

Light snowfall was reported in Kedarnath’s high peaks, while Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib also witnessed fresh snow. In Pithoragarh district, snowfall in Himalayan regions caused temperatures to fall further. Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines in Uttarkashi also received snowfall, while lower areas experienced intermittent rain.

Rain Helps Control Forest Fires

Chamoli district saw relief as rain extinguished forest fires that had been burning for three days in Dayondi and Barsaali. Forest officials confirmed that the fires had caused significant damage to resources, but the rainfall helped bring the situation under control.

Warning from Meteorological Department

C.S. Tomar, Director of the Meteorological Centre, stated that thunderstorms, hailstorms, and strong winds are expected in several districts on Monday. Wind speeds could reach up to 60 km/h. The orange alert indicates potentially dangerous weather, and people have been advised to stay indoors and take precautions.

Impact on Daily Life

With temperatures dropping after rain and snowfall, evenings have turned colder across the state. Residents are once again relying on warm clothing. Farmers and travelers have been advised to remain cautious, as hailstorms and strong winds could damage crops and disrupt movement. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and the orange alert remains in place for affected districts.
