Sonam Wangchuk, detained under NSA for nearly 6 months, to be released

New Delhi: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was detained under the stringent National Security Act (NSA), is set to be released as the government has decided to revoke his detention with immediate effect. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the decision to revoke Wangchuk’s detention was taken after “due consideration”.

The climate activist was detained on September 26 for allegedly inciting a mob with inflammatory remarks in Ladakh. His detention came after violent protests in Ladakh over the statehood demand claimed four lives and left more than 50 others, including security personnel, injured.
