SA20 Auction: Costliest buys, updated squads after intense bidding wars

The auction for the fourth season of the SA20 was successfully held on Tuesday, September 9 as several big names fetched massive bids.

Dewald Brevis emerged as the most expensive player ever in the history of SA20 as he was sold for a whopping R16.5 million to Pretoria Capitals (PC). Both Joburg Super Kings (JSK) and Capitals were in an intense bidding war to acquire the services of the young batting sensation. However, it was Pretoria, who eventually managed to outbid everyone.

Durban had shown keen interest in buying Markram, who has previously led Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) to back-to-back titles. They raised his price to R12.4 million after an intense bidding war with Pretoria Capitals. However, Sunrisers weren’t willing to let go of their skipper as they exercised their right to match forcing Super Giants to increase their bid to R14 million, which eventually sealed the deal.

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder emerged as the third most expensive player at the auction, being bought by Super Kings for R9 million. Apart from him, Gerald Coetzee (R7.4 million to DSG), Nandre Burger (R6.3 million to JSK), Matthew Breetzke (R6.1 million to SEC), Rassie van der Dussen (R5.2 million to MI Cape Town), Ottneil Baartman (R5.1 million to Paarl Royals) and Anrich Nortje (R5 million to SEC) were the other notable buys.

South Africa’s Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma once again managed to find no bidders at the auction for the second successive season. Earlier, no team had shown interest for Bavuma in the inaugural SA20 Auction, but he eventually played for Sunrisers after being signed as an injury replacement.

He was retained for the following season before being released by the franchise. Legendary England seamer James Anderson was another notable player to find no takers at the bidding event.
