Mother Shailputri is the daughter of mountain king Himalaya. Mother’s name was Shailputri because she was born as the daughter of mountain king Himalaya. According to Devi Bhagwat Purana, once Prajapati Daksh organized a huge yagya at his place.

In this Yagya, he invited all the Gods and Goddesses, but did not send invitation to Lord Shiva and his daughter Pavarti. Even after this, when Goddess Parvati asked to go to the yagya, Lord Shiva refused to let the goddess go to the yagya, but the mother did not agree and she went to the function. In the Yagya, Prajapati Daksh insulted Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva a lot.

Mother attained Mahadev as her husband by doing penance.

Mother felt very sad due to the insult of Lord Shiva and she sacrificed her life by jumping into the sacrificial altar. After this, Goddess Parvati was born in the place of mountain king Himalaya and her mother’s name was Shailputri. After this the mother performed severe penance to attain Lord Shiva. Pleased with the penance of his mother, Mahadev met Parvati in the form of her husband.
