According to the legend, King Daksh, father of Mata Sati, had organized a yagya, in which he had invited all the gods and goddesses, but did not invite Mata Sati and Mahadev. When Goddess Sati came to know about this, she started insisting on Mahadev to go to the Yagya. Lord Shiva explained a lot to Sati that it was not right to go to this Yagya without being invited, but Mother Sati disobeyed Mahadev and went to the Yagya.

As soon as Mother Sati reached the yagya of her father Daksh, her father insulted her and her husband i.e. Lord Shiva a lot. Mother could not bear the insult of Mahadev and jumped into the fire of Yagya Kund. When Lord Shiva came to know about this, he gave death sentence to Daksh. Also, for disobeying Mother Sati, she was cursed to live as a cuckoo for thousands of years.
It is said that due to this curse of Lord Shiva, Goddess Sati lived her life as a cuckoo in the Nandan forest for thousands of years. Then he was born as Mother Parvati and attained Lord Shiva.
